Fall Handbag Refresh: The Colors, Shapes & Styles We're Carrying Into Autumn 2026
There's something about the arrival of fall that makes us ready for a wardrobe refresh.
The lighter colors and easygoing accessories of summer begin making room for richer textures, deeper shades and handbags with a little more presence. And for Fall 2026, handbags are doing exactly that.
Think cranberry, burgundy, merlot and oxblood. Chocolate brown, cognac, camel and olive. Leopard and exotic-inspired prints. Supple leather, suede and beautifully slouchy silhouettes. And yes—the oversized handbag is absolutely having a moment again.
The best part?
You don't necessarily need to buy something brand new to embrace any of it.
Some of this season's biggest handbag trends have been sitting in closets—and circulating through the pre-loved luxury market—for years.
Burgundy Is the New Fall Neutral
If there's one color we're going to see everywhere this fall, it's burgundy.
But don't limit yourself to one particular shade. Look for cranberry, maroon, merlot, wine, oxblood, burnt cherry and other deep reds.
Fall 2026 runways featured burgundy across totes, shoulder bags, clutches and top handles, with designers including Chanel, Gucci, Miu Miu and Ferragamo embracing the color. Vogue has even described the family of merlot, burnt-cherry and oxblood shades as one of the season's standout handbag directions.
And I understand why.
A deep red handbag gives you color without being difficult to wear. Pair one with black, camel, cream, denim, gray, chocolate brown or even navy.
Think of burgundy as a neutral with personality.
And if you already own a beautiful vintage wine-colored bag? Pull it out. She's ready.
Rich Earth Tones Are Back
Fall wouldn't feel like fall without beautiful earthy shades.
This season we're seeing:
Chocolate brown • Cognac • Camel • Caramel • Olive • Moss • Tobacco • Warm tan
These colors feel particularly luxurious when paired with leather and suede.
Current Fall 2026 coverage is emphasizing earthy, nature-inspired palettes as well as richer tactile materials, making older designer bags in these shades suddenly feel incredibly current again.
That's one of the things I love about luxury resale: fashion trends come back around, but a beautifully made handbag never really left.
The Slouch Is Back
Put away the ruler.
Not every handbag needs to stand perfectly upright.
One of Fall 2026's biggest shifts is toward bags that feel softer, relaxed and slightly lived-in. We're seeing hobos, relaxed shoulder bags, supple leather totes and bags designed to naturally collapse and slouch when carried.
There's an effortless luxury to this look.
Instead of looking overly precious, the bag looks like something you actually use.
For the pre-loved shopper, that's wonderful news. A gently softened leather handbag doesn't necessarily need to look "old." With the right style, that relaxed character may be exactly what fashion is asking for right now.
Big Bags Are Back, Too
After years of micro bags that barely held a lipstick and a credit card, practicality is winning some ground again.
Fall 2026 is giving us larger shoulder bags, carryalls and oversized totes designed for real life. Vogue's runway report specifically highlights the "all-rounder carryall" and "super shoulder bag" among the season's major silhouettes.
Laptop? Wallet? Makeup bag? Sunglasses? Water bottle? Random receipts from three weeks ago?
Finally, we have room.
This is another area where shopping pre-loved makes so much sense. Larger designer totes from previous collections can suddenly look remarkably current again.
Animal Prints Are Having Their Moment
Fall is also getting a little wild.
Leopard, zebra, snake, croc-embossed and other exotic-inspired finishes are showing up as statement accessories for the season. Fall street-style coverage has particularly highlighted snake-pattern totes, while current trend reports are pointing to animal prints and croc-inspired textures.
The trick is not to overthink it.
An animal-print handbag can become the focal point of an otherwise simple outfit:
Black sweater + denim + leopard bag.
Cream knit + chocolate trousers + snakeskin-inspired bag.
All black + croc-embossed burgundy handbag.
Let the bag do the talking.
Suede Was Made for Fall
There may not be another handbag material that says autumn quite like suede.
Chocolate brown, camel, burgundy and black suede bags are appearing heavily this season, from roomy totes and buckets to relaxed shoulder bags. Vogue's recent fall coverage called attention to suede's continued resurgence, while Marie Claire highlighted those same rich shades among this year's standout suede choices.
The texture instantly adds warmth to an outfit.
Of course, suede requires a little extra care—especially around rain, oils and color transfer—but a beautiful pre-loved suede bag in good condition can be a fantastic fall find.
Before You Buy New, Look Back
Here's where I think Fall 2026 gets particularly interesting.
Many of these "new" trends aren't really new.
Hobo bags? We've carried them before.
Oversized totes? Absolutely.
Burgundy handbags? They've been around for decades.
Animal prints? They never completely disappeared.
Chocolate leather? A classic.
That's why pre-loved luxury and seasonal fashion work so beautifully together.
Instead of chasing every new handbag released for fall, look through your own collection first. You may already own exactly what everyone is shopping for.
And if you don't, the pre-loved market gives you access to previous collections, discontinued designs, vintage pieces and luxury handbags at prices that can be considerably more approachable than purchasing new.
Fall 2026: Shop the Trend, Not Necessarily the Season
One of my favorite things about working with pre-loved luxury is watching fashion come full circle.
A handbag doesn't suddenly lose its beauty because the fashion house released something newer.
Sometimes all it takes is a new season for everyone else to rediscover what was beautiful about it in the first place.
So this fall, look for the deep wine reds, rich browns, earthy neutrals, animal prints, suede textures, relaxed silhouettes and oversized totes.
But before assuming you need the newest handbag from the boutique, take another look at the pieces that already exist.
Your perfect Fall 2026 handbag may have been made ten—or twenty—years ago.
And I think there's something pretty luxurious about that.
